Allow me to direct you to an intriguing post at Matt Heller's Hella Frisch, the search for sharp. It's an interesting look at how the intonation of orchestras continues to creep up, in the eternal quest for a "brighter" sound, and the parallel with the food industry's use of sweeteners in almost everything.

Sounds like a Republican plot. I mean... Shit... I can't find a beef jerky manufacturer that doesn't add some kind of sweetener to it. Sorry. I like mine savory and spicy. Most jerkies list corn syrup second on the ingredients list. Blasphemy!
You may be more right than you know - check out the book The Omnivore's Dilemma, which traces the sources of the industrial (and organic / local / foraged) food chains. Even if you'd never thought of eating as a political act, this book will convince you. And those corn-based sweeteners are very much part of a Republican military-industrial complex. As are the corn-fed cows rendered into those beef jerky strips.
The conspiracy is to make sure we never realize what we're eating, and supporting. Blasphemy indeed!
