Vote early, vote broadband
I'm on the mail list for the Zogby polls, and this morning an interersting question came up, one I am passing along to you. It relates to a longer post I have going on-line later today.
If you were allowed to vote in national, state, or local elections via an Internet site, would you? And for our international guests, has net-based voting been enabled in your country?

oh, sure i'd vote online... no doubt - IF it was allowed over here.
but i can't say that i'm unhappy with the use of ballot papers. still better than any kind of "voting machine" imho
YES!
Paper ballots should be enshrined in the US constitution. An electronic ballot forfeits each voters right to check and double check and know his vote was counted. Again and again if necessary. A paper ballot is tangible proof. Otherwise we are trusting a a corporation, and its programmers, and the people they train. Paper ballots may be flawed, but they are flawed in a way we can all understand.
I must agree with Mr. Levi although who knows what goes on in the morass. I don't trust the electronic method enough. Actually I don't trust the whole system at all, after the last one.
I don't know about you guys, but I do all my banking and bill-paying online. I don't think there's anything about a paper trail that's inherently more reliable then electronic. Online voting could be done so you can "check and double check and know his vote was counted" . . . I mean, at least as well if not better then the paper ballots I remember.
I suspect that voting online could be made much more secure then it is with those fucked-up voting machines they have going right now. Those things were a typical mistake that gets made while figuring things out. All we need is some non-competent people in place, and online voting will be just fine.
I think the difference with online banking and online payment systems is that it is in everyone's best interest for those to be always correct and transparent. You will only use these services if you know a wrong will be righted. And more importantly you will check to see when you've been wronged.
What is the best way to compile these free floating and anonymous "tally marks?" Online voting, optical scan machines, touch screen and paper ballots all require trust, but only the paper ballot provides verification for people like me who do not trust the current regime.
who watches the watchman?
Paper ballot for me, please. For reasons already stated.
