Unanswered question
As a follow-up to the previous post, another thing I found odd about the supposed case made by Margolis was her inability to actually tie this proposed change to a lessening of corruption in the county. Her arguments basically boiled down to this:
- Other big cities have strong mayors, so we should, too.
- Carlos Alvarez is a good guy, and we should trust him.
- The county commission is stupid and corrupt.
- Corruption is bad, mmkay?
There was never any explanation of how building a political machine will reduce corruption in the county. Oddly enough, the supporters of the strong mayor proposal among local bloggers seem much more interested in changing county structure to punish the commission than in actually effecting reform. MVB has a clever "Uncle Sam" poster encouraging us to "K.O. Corruption," but I've not seen any explanation of how concentrating power in one person will achieve this. Can anyone enlighten me?
