Meanwhile, on the Internet...
There are things I must do today, but with any luck the previously mentioned something else will come later. Until then, here are a few intriguing links for your enjoyment.
- Journalist, fringe explorer, and author of one of my favorite interview books (Them) Jon Ronson took it on himself to find out where junk mail comes from, and who determines which lists you are on. The results of his research are interesting and quite funny, as with most of his work. [link]
- Musician, author, songwriter, poet, and performance artist Tom Waits is one of the greatest artists living today, with a body of work which will without doubt stand the test of time. Back in the earlier days of his career one of his songs was used for a demonstration for a pioneering animation technology which was later awarded a technological achievement Academy Award (and sold to various directors including Ralph Bakshi). The video was never commercially exhibited or distributed, but languished in the creator's vault until recently. Take a moment to read the story, and then enjoy watching the video fof for an early Waits classic, The One That Got Away.
- Here's something a little different. There are plenty of sites for people who collect books and photos and whatnot, but what do you think of a site for people who collect words? Wordie lets you create lists of your favorite words, compare your lists to those of others, and comment all over the place. It's so unutterably weird that I love it.
Those of you in South Florida, try to stay warm and dry, and those of you in the Tundra, use your hatred of those of us in places where 60° is considered "cold" to keep you warm.

Thanks for that Waits link. Very interesting. Thinking about that time frame--Bakshi's work, Star Wars, Heavy Metal (mag and movie)-- brings back fond memories.
Ditto Verticus. Waits is thoroughly under-appreciated. Seeing that cartoon, I get irritated about all the time I wasted watching Walt Disney.
Great list. You'll see wordie appear in an upcoming issue of my Website Wednesday. Thanks for the tip!
thanks for the tom waits link.
To add to the chorus, many thanks for the Tom Waits link, one of my favorite musicians. What do you think of his latest 3-disc release?
Orphans is good for fans, but not terribly cohesive. Then again, it's a collection of ephemera, so you wouldn't expect it to be. There's quite a bit of gold buried in there, though, including a personal favorite from way back, Waits' cover of "Heigh-Ho".
Oh crap, I clicked that Wordie link and got sucked in. Thanks a lot, mkh! Don't go handing out links like that to crazy people.
BTW, I agree with you about the latest Waits release. Fortunately I am a ridiculous fan.
