Wanted: Seattle-area Handmaid
The Supreme Court of the State of Washington (to which several of my friends are suddenly moving) recently upheld a ban on gay marriage, claiming that the state has a legitimate interest in preserving marriage for couples who can procreate. In response, the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance has proposed and received approval for an initiative which would require married couples to — among other things — file "proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage automatically annulled". (Read the full press release.)
I would like to see this get on Washington's November ballot, just to force the people who are trying to weasel their way into discrimination try to work around it. Do I think that this will change any minds? Probably not, but it should close off the "marriage is for breeders" argument.
While I still find the practice reprehensible, I have to admire that this group has successfully adopted the GOP tactic of creating PACs with deceptive names. I wonder how many conservatives will automatically contribute money to an organization with "defense of marriage" in the name, without realizing it is defending marriage from homophobes and bigots?

An excellent use of Atwood in your post title.
The problem I have with this stunt, as sympathetic as I am to the their objectives, is that alienates people and gives ammo to the other side. To the layperson it makes them look like extremists abusing the system to make a point -which is a problem because a) plays right into the hands of the conservatives talking about a "gay agenda" and b) at the end of the day you need as many people as possible to vote in your favor. if they think you are just as big an idot as the other guy, they'll just wash their hands.
On the other hand, it is getting a lot of attention, which is what they wanted and that's good.
