I still think it's a stupid name
I am experimenting with Twitter, which is — apparently — intending for people who think that blog posts require too much effort. I've spent some time trolling through the Twit-o-sphere™ and it is, by and large, people telling the world what they are eating and who they just saw at Starbucks. While ti is web-friendly, most people are using it with text messages on their cell phones, since you can sign up to "follow" a particular person and receive their 140-character deep thoughts in real time.
It is the reciprocal of that feature that interests me, though. With hurricane season upon us, the ability to post quick notes to Hidden City through a cell phone is intriguing. During last night's storm teaser trailer I tapped out a note, and was able to quickly find out how Manola was doing over on the beach. It has its uses, and if I was a teenager or in my twenties it would have even more.
So I'm giving Twitter a shot and posting it on my sidebar for a while. If you are interested in trying it yourself let me know.

Oh, two larger explanations for past events are coming soon, too.
I've been finding Twitter mostly useful for its entertainment value- another way to interact with friends who I may not see very often. I've also used it to organize spur-of-the-moment gatherings, though, and of course the use you mentioned- letting a group of people know where you are and how you're doing- is a helpful thing as well.
Following Fanless is far more exciting than my weather reports though.
I'm in!
