Oldest pastime, too

Yes, that's an ancient store carving of a man performing an unnatural act with a horse. What, you thought that was invented in a Tijuana cantina?
This sculpture and many others are part of a 10th century temple complex in Khajuraho, India. It was a site of significant religious and cultural importance until the 1400s, when the regional capitol was moved, allowing this complex to fall from memory. When it was rediscovered by an Englishman in the 19th century it had been overtaken by jungle, which undoubtedly helped to preserve it from desecration.
Many more photos are available. Besides the obvious prurient interest they may evoke in some, the more explicit carvings are of interest for their frank and sensuous depiction of sex, something unimaginable in western society even today. We can show all the sex we want in modern society, as long as it is being used for profit. Illustrating sex just to celebrate its role in life — in all its variety — is seen as wrong, but India had it right over a thousand years ago. I wonder if we'll ever catch up?
