Eat what you know
Tiffany posted an interesting essay on buying locally grown produce in the DC area. I know we have some farmer's market options in this area, but I am self-aware enough to know I won't go to that much trouble. Hell, I tend toward one meal a day as it is, mainly due to laziness. Still, if I didn't live a hermit's life (or hermetic life, perhaps?) I would probably avail myself of the options. I know I enjoy the taste of non-commercial food much more, and it would be better for me, too.
Convenience versus quality: the conundrum on which American society is built.

I live on "Lean Cuisines" and prepared foods as it is. I don't think I will ever go the farmer's market route -- for no reason other than my own laziness.
Not only can you buy local produce, you can put it up (can, freeze) for use at other times.
Okay, I had a garden once, and I froze some broccoli.
It's the thought that counts, right?
There is some irony to it, but Miami is one of the worst places to eat local. That said, now is the time to sign up for the 07/08 redlands CSA program -- half a share is $160! I think i'm gonna do it.
Fortunately, we like to cook, so that helps, but really... when we're eating lots of farmer's market stuff, we end up eating a lot of salad-y things, where there's not so much "cooking" as "slicing" and "chopping." Also, the Farmer's Market we frequent is just a couple of miles from our home, and right in the middle of a whole bunch of other places we tend to frequent on the weekends.
Community-Supported Agriculture is a good way to do it without having to trek to a Farmer's Market. The drawback is that you may end up with odd stuff that you don't know what to do with. ;)
There's a farmers market across from my building Tuesdays and Fridays, and one a bit farther out, but still on my way home, Mondays and Wednesdays. So I tend to get my produce, bread, and even occasionally goat cheese and honey, after work a few days a week.
One of the stalls on Tues/Fri has also begun selling organic lamb and pork, and I may give that a try sometime soon.
Actually, I am going to go in with some friends on the Redlands CSA, since they deliver to my neighborhood. We'll see how it works out.
