Purpose
So let us consider for a moment this thing we call the Internet. In your opinion, what is it for?
The question isn't really rhetorical, it is something about which I've been thinking for quite a while. When you consider other big infrastructures — the interstate highway system, the telephone network — they have a fairly easy to explain purpose. But this inter-operable linking of computer networks around which so many of lives revolve isn't as easy for me to summarize.
My own thoughts are still semi-solid and incomplete, but I am seeking your perspective. So, what's it about? What is it for? Or, for those of you in the corporate world, what's the bottom line C-level executive sound-bite explaining why we need it?

The Internet is simply a technologically sophisticated means to deliver media. Text, photos, video, and sound. Just like Radio and TV, the Internet can be used to inform, entertain, advertise, and connect (opinions and perspectives to a larger audience.)
(By the way, you have a great local blog and (if interested) should check us out if you ever need great content for it.

The purpose of the Internet is to get three squares in a row, either across, up-and-down, or diagonally. A player receives a square by deciding whether a star is giving a correct answer or making one up. We play a two out of three game match. Once a day, we play for the Secret Square. Johnny Jacobs....
Oh way a minute. That's "the object of the game" from the Hollywood Squares.
Sorry.
But seriously....
It's about schlepping bits from place to place. And bits can be any kind of information, and the information can be processed just about anywhere.
the internet doesn't need *me* - but *i* need the internet(s)...
As noted by previous commenters, the internet is simply a tool to provide all manner of information worldwide, whether it be content from an online encyclopedia or that incredibly annoying - yet addictive - badger/mushroom video.
My main issue with the internet is that we have an entire generation of citizens that have never had to actually pick up an encyclopedia or dictionary to research something. Book? What's that? As much information as is available to us now online, I really feel that we are becoming dumber as a society in whole. (Totally off topic, I know; but when else will I get to voice this opinion in polite society?) ;)
I thought it was for downloading music and privately perusing pornography. For a more informative perspective, I'd defer to Al Gore, who invented it.
the internet exists to make my life easier!
