For your reconsideration
It is time again for that much-maligned commercial holiday dedicated to the selling of chocolate and flowers, said holiday which has the side-effect and clearly polarizing the populace into the sappily romantic and the sneeringly bitter. Since these days I fall more into the former camp than the latter — although I have certainly had my days years of the latter — please accept these audio treats in lieu of flowers.
- To begin, let's have a repeat of last year's love-based playlist (actual love not guaranteed, but some laughs may ensue).
- As a bonus for 2008, here is a lovely and unsettling story by Neil Gaiman, as read by the author. Please enjoy Harlequin Valentine, from the collection Fragile Things.
- And because I love you all, here's another bonus track, from one of the best songwriers America ever produced: Warren Zevon, Reconsider Me.
Of course, these songs will be available for a limited time only. I'll be taking them down some time tomorrow night.
And what the hell, here's another re-run: the sordid tale of my senior prom. Go ahead and laugh, you insensitive bastards! I did, eventually.

My friend, I tip my hat to you. We share similar prom stories. I played sports and was reasonably popular, but for some reason had no interest in prom and all its pomp and circumstances. I went with a last minute date too. Except the difference in mine and yours is mine truly disliked me, and did a pretty poor job of masking the fact that she only went with me 'cause she was an underclassman and it was prestigious for her.
The good old days!
My HS BF dumped me two months before prom. So I went with one of his friends. Because the guy's GF said I could "borrow him." Prom sucked!
On the flipside, that playlist is fantastic!!
I am glad you guys enjoyed the story (and the tunes, Balou)!
Thanks much! I've pilfered all the songs I didn't have for the iTunes master control program (and surprisingly little overlap, except for the Doors, Beatles, Bjork, Joy Division, 2 Nice Girls...looking forward to delving into the collection.)
I went stag to junior prom, having been dumped by my boyfriend shortly before. Senior year, I took an underclass girl as my date- I had tried to get a guy friend she had a crush on to ask her, but he didn't, and I wanted her to come have fun at the party with me.
Fortunately, I went to the sort of school where these departures from tradition were not only tolerated, but celebrated. The school had been all girls until the year before I started there, so we were still in the "very few boys" phase. The school emphasized the "junior and senior class party" aspect and de-emphasized the having-a-date thing. As such, I actually have pretty pleasant memories of prom.
Prom? There was prom?
